Let’s face it: Apple Watches all look pretty much the same, even the newest Apple Watch Series 7, which has a few minor differences if you look closely enough. Even though the latest model has a new processor, additional features, and somewhat modified dimensions and finishes, it’s often difficult for casual observers to distinguish Series 7 from earlier models. This is understandable, given that there’s only so much you can do with a smartwatch’s design without jeopardizing its utility. At the same time, most consumers aren’t as familiar with Apple Watches as they are with iPhones, so they are frequently unaware of which model is the most recent.
But don’t worry: we’ve put together a guide to the latesWatch of Apple, as well as a list of the latest Apple Watches that are still available from Apple. Apple Watch models that have been discontinued by Apple are also included, however many of them may still be found online through private sellers and secondhand/refurbishing merchants if you look hard enough.
What is the most recent Apple Watch model?
The Apple Watch Series 7 is the newest and most advanced Apple smartwatch available today, having debuted on October 15, 2021. However, it is not the only Apple Watch model that Apple sells directly. The Apple Watch SE and the older Watch of Apple Series 3 are the other two. Yes, it may appear strange that Apple continues to offer the Apple Watch 3 after canceling the Series 4, 5, and 6. The nearly five-year-old watch, however, has been kept as a lower-cost option because, at $199, it is even less expensive than the Apple Watch SE.
Apple is presently selling several Apple Watch models.
Apple Watch Series 7
The Apple Watch Series 7 could very well be the ideal smartwatch. While there are some minor cosmetic differences between the Apple Watch Series 7 and the previous Watch of Apple Series 6, the Watch of Apple Series 7 is still quite comparable to the Apple Watch Series 6. The Retina display, on the other hand, is 20% larger and has a 1.7mm bezel that is 40% smaller than earlier models. A 2.5D screen curve flows over the edge of the body, and the rounded edges of the casing are encased in a strong, crack-resistant crystal.
The larger, always-on screen accommodates 50 percent more text and can accommodate a complete keyboard. When viewed indoors, the screen is 70% brighter than prior models, and the new IP6X dust resistance certification complements the previous model’s WR50 water resistance grade.
Midnight, Starlight, green, blue, and Product Red are among the five colors available for the aluminum variant, which supports new watch faces created for the larger, curved screen. The Series 7 is also bigger, with case sizes of 41mm and 45mm, yet it still works with all existing Apple Watch bands from the first generation.
Like the S6, the Series 7 is powered by Apple’s S7 SiP, which has a 64-bit dual-core processor. On the back, the same sensor array measures heart rate and blood oxygen levels, as well as taking an electrocardiogram (ECG) readout. There’s a new fall detection feature for sports and cycling, and the Series 7 can also track sleep respiratory rate thanks to WatchOS 8.
The battery lasts about 18 hours before it needs to be recharged. The Apple Watch Series 7’s battery can be charged to 88 percent in 45 minutes thanks to new fast-charging technologies.
Apple Watch SE
The Apple Watch SE, to put it succinctly, is the Apple Watch Series 6 without the always-on display, ECG sensor, blood-oxygen monitor, or the newer S6 CPU. Aside from that, it’s a highly capable and usable smartwatch, although one that is less expensive. In fact, the Apple Watch SE and the Watch of Apple 6 are nearly identical in appearance. It has a 1.78-inch Retina display with 326 pixel-per-inch density, which is identical to the display of the Series 6. It also has a large selection of bands and straps, albeit it does not come in stainless steel or titanium.
Aside from the absence of ECG and SpO2 sensors, the Apple Watch SE is a well-rounded health and fitness tracker. It can monitor your heart rate and track your sleep, just like the Apple Watch Series 6, and it also delivers a wealth of data for a range of workouts.
In terms of the overall user experience, the SE’s utilization of the S5 processor makes it extremely fast. It integrates smoothly with a variety of apps, ranging from social media tools like Twitter to productivity software like Microsoft Teams. The Digital Crown dial, like that of other Apple Watches, is intuitive and responsive, allowing you to navigate WatchOS with ease.
The Apple Watch SE is available in two sizes: 40mm and 44mm, with a cellular version available for an additional $50. (letting you make telephone calls). Whichever option you choose, you’ll have one of the greatest smartwatches on the market. The Apple Watch SE, which debuted in 2020, is also ready for an upgrade, and the Apple Watch SE 2 is scheduled to be introduced in 2022.
Apple Watch Series 3
Yes, including the 2017 Apple Watch Series 3 in an article about the latest Apple Watches may seem unusual. Apple does, however, continue to sell the Watch of Apple 3 as a low-cost model on its website, despite discontinuing the Series 4, 5, and 6. The Watch of Apple Series 3 is still a great wristwatch, and it was the first to include a 4G LTE cellular connection.
The Apple Watch 3 now starts at $199, which is $80 and $200 less than the Apple Watch SE and Series 7 basic models, respectively. For that amount, you get a 1.65-inch Retina OLED display with 303 ppi, a dual-core S3 CPU, extended battery life, a perfect software experience (it’s compatible with WatchOS 7), and the usual selection of useful health-and-fitness tracking apps.
While the Watch of Apple Series 3 lacks some of the more advanced sensors included in later watch generations, it still includes heart-rate monitoring as well as the GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, and barometer needed to track various workouts. It has the same software gimmicks as newer devices, such as sleep monitoring and automatic hand-washing recognition, because it runs on the latest WatchOS 8. Although it isn’t as speedy as the Series 7 (or SE), it still outperforms many other smartwatches.
Models that have been discontinued
Apple Watch Series 6
The Watch of Apple Series 6 is now the best discontinued smartwatch available (if you’re lucky). It starts at $399 and includes all the bases you’d expect from a smartwatch. Its health-and-fitness tracking is as complete as any other smartwatch on the market, its software is arguably the smoothest on any watch on the market right now, and its powerful Apple S6 processor can perform any work you’d expect from a smartwatch.
Its standard model has a lightweight aluminum frame, but you can upgrade to a stainless steel or titanium frame for a little more money, which is more durable but a little heavier. In the great majority of situations, the Watch of Apple Series 6’s screen makes the always-on screen more visible and useful.
The watch’s blood oxygen (SpO2) sensor, for example, measures whether there is enough oxygen in the blood to give you an approximate indication of how quickly you recover from hard exercise. It’s one of the best fitness trackers on the market, with easy-to-use software and a battery that lasts around a day and a half when used moderately. Despite the fact that it is no longer available on Apple’s website, it is still available new and reconditioned from retailers including as Amazon, Target, and Walmart.
Apple Watch Series 5
The Apple Watch Series 5 was released in September 2019 and was the first Watch of Apple to include an always-on display. It also solidified the Apple Watch’s reputation for sleek software and rigorous fitness-tracking features.
While you won’t be able to buy it directly from Apple, a simple search reveals that it’s available reconditioned on Amazon and Best Buy, as well as deep discounters like Dailysale. On Amazon, some new models are still available.
Apple Watch Series 4
When we examined the Watch of Apple Series 4 in 2018, we gave it a perfect 5-out-of-5 rating, calling it “Apple’s best hour in years.” Three years later, it’s still a fantastic smartwatch, and while it lacks the always-on display of the Series 5 and 6, it does pretty much everything else a smartwatch should. Its design is (unsurprisingly) lovely, its 1.78-inch Retina OLED screen is bright and clear, and its fitness tracking is dependable. You’ll get all of the newest Apple Watch software improvements because it’s compatible with WatchOS 7.
It’s difficult to find a new Watch of Apple Series 4 online these days, while it’s available renewed/refurbished on Amazon, Best Buy, and eBay, as well as heavily discounted on Dailysale. On Amazon, some new models are still available.
Apple Watch Series 2
Now we’re truly traveling through time. The Apple Watch Series 2 was released in 2016, and it marked a significant improvement over its predecessor. It adds waterproofing, a brighter OLED display, the dual-core S2 processor, and its own GPS sensor, making it ideal for swimmers. When combined, this elevated the wristwatch to the status of full-fledged health and fitness tracker, while WatchOS 3 improved communications and added a variety of relaxing options. However, the Series 2 was slightly hampered by its limited battery life.
It’s becoming increasingly difficult to find a new Watch of Apple Series 2 on the market. Amazon and Best Buy no longer carry it, while eBay only sells used and reconditioned units.
Apple Watch Series 1
If you’re a consumer electronics historian, the Apple Watch Series 1 might be of interest to you. It was Apple’s first smartwatch, released in 2015, and while it lacked the elegance and power of its predecessors, it was a huge success. You won’t receive as many fitness-tracking capabilities as you would with the Series 6 or SE (or 5, 4, 6, or 3), but it is compatible with WatchOS 4, which has additional watch faces, enhanced heart-rate visualizations, and a new Music app, as well as compatibility for a larger variety of workout kinds.
You won’t find this brand new on Amazon, Walmart, or Best Buy, which is unsurprising. Instead, go to eBay or Dailysale, where only pre-owned and reconditioned devices are available for purchase.
The Apple Watch Series 7 is the most recent Watch of Apple, with the Watch of Apple SE being outstanding but not as powerful. The Series 7 is the greatest smartwatch on the market right now, however the SE is nearly as good if you don’t care about an always-on display or a blood-oxygen sensor.
Meanwhile, Apple continues to sell the Watch of Apple Series 3 directly through its website, with the 2017 model being the cheapest smartwatch it currently sells — a model we no longer believe is worth the savings, especially since the SE is only $80 more and offers a more up-to-date smartwatch experience. If you’re searching for a low-cost choice, you might want to wait until a new version of the SE is produced, which is expected to happen this year, according to folks in the know.
