How many Matrix movies are there?

Some may argue that you can never have too much of a good thing. However, when it comes to the Matrix movies franchise, some may differ. Is the world truly in need of any more sequels and rip-offs? So relax, connect your brain cells, and enjoy the ride.

We’re all aware that there are three Matrix movies, right? WRONG. It turns out that there are four. Many of us were duped by the 2003 animated picture The Matrix: Reloaded, which some mistook for a sequel to the 1999 blockbuster The Matrix, but was actually the second episode of a trilogy. Still perplexed? For your convenience, here’s a concise rundown of all Matrix movies to date.

The original The Matrix, starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne and released in 1999, is where it all began. It follows Neo, a computer hacker who discovers he has been living in a synthetic world manufactured by robots and joins up with rebels to combat them.

There are numerous Matrix movies. Really, a lot. In fact, there may be more Matrix movies than Star Wars films. That’s a lot of movies to see. If you’re searching for something to do this weekend, or if you just want to know how many Matrix movies there are, we’ve got the answer right here.

The Matrix movies

The Matrix, which debuted in theaters in 1999, wowed moviegoers with a leather-clad and gravity-defying Keanu Reeves fighting against artificial agents of a programmed world in stylized kung-fu and black leather attire. They were not only fashionable, but they were also striving to liberate humanity from the shackles of a machine-controlled Matrix. The Wachowski Sisters popularized the now-famous redpill/bluepill metaphor for analyzing the universe, asking audiences to evaluate the similarities between our own reality and a computer simulation.

The Matrix was followed by two more feature films, The Matrix Reloaded (May 2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (November 2003), before Lana Wachowski returned to the property to develop The Matrix Resurrections after a 20-year hiatus (December 2021). The Animatrix, an anthology of animated short films published in the middle of the trilogy, is also part of the franchise (June 2003). The Animatrix is considered Matrix canon since four of the nine shorts were scripted by the Wachowskis themselves. While the anthology is a collection of animated short films, the individual movies take place at various moments in the Matrix chronology. Although a number of The Animatrix stories take place before the events of The Matrix, we recommend watching The Matrix first in order to completely comprehend and appreciate the short stories.

The film The Matrix

The Matrix is a 1999 film that introduces fans to Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus as they fight real-world robots and Matrix agents somewhere around the (estimated) year 2199, according to human rebels. However, given that the Matrix movies have already gone through six cycles, the actual year in which the film is set could be much further away.

The Animatrix: The Story of a Child

“The Kid” featured in this gritty animated story is a character seen in the second installment of the film trilogy — a young boy who breaks out of the Matrix movies and saves himself by sheer willpower alone, self-actualizing as no one has before him — and his story takes place between the events of The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded, and his story takes place within the six-month gap between the events of The Matrix movies and The Matrix Reloaded.

The Animatrix: Osiris’ Last Flight

“Final Flight of the Osiris” takes set soon before the events of The Matrix Reloaded, and it mostly concentrates on Jue and Thadeus’ stylised simulated fight. However, the task that leads to their demise include informing the human rebels about the Sentinel army’s approach to Zion.

Reloaded The Matrix

The Matrix Reloaded takes place six months after the events of The Matrix and explores Neo and Trinity’s love story as Neo discovers the cyclical nature and genesis of the Matrix movies. It begins immediately after the “Final Flight of Osiris” short.

Beyond the Animatrix

Given the existence of the prior version of the Matrix movies, “Beyond” happens sometime during the trilogy’s events. It follows a little girl named Yoko and some neighborhood youngsters as they find a “haunted house” full of strange abnormalities that we know are Matrix faults.

World Record Animatrix

“World Record,” like “The Kid’s Story,” portrays a man named Dan who briefly escapes the Matrix thanks to the strength of his physical willpower. Unlike Kid, Dan only experiences self-actualization for a brief moment at the summit of his race before collapsing back into the Matrix. The story takes place in an undefined time in The Matrix canon, but given the presence of the Agents, it is most likely in a prior version of the Matrix.

Program for The Animatrix

“Program” is a wonderfully animated short about simulated training in a Samurai-style training program. Given that it is a story about rebels testing the allegiance of their crew to the cause, “Program” is most likely set after The Matrix and before The Matrix Revolutions.

Revolutions in the Matrix movies

The Matrix Revolutions begins just after The Matrix Reloaded concludes, completing the trilogy of feature films and depicting Neo’s ultimate sacrifice and attempt to make peace with the machines.

Matriculated Animatrix

“Matriculated,” another animated short with no obvious location in the Matrix timeline, follows a separate group of human rebels from the ones we know from Zion. They live near the planet’s surface and spend their time capturing robots and “waking” them by teaching them human characteristics such as empathy, passion, and playfulness. This is difficult to place because these individuals could be quite far distant from the Zion and Machine cycles.

Resurrections in the Matrix movies

The events of The Matrix Resurrections take place 60 years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions. We see that the humans have relocated to a new metropolis called IO, which is controlled by Niobe (Jada Pinkett-Smith). Neo’s sacrifice and reinsertion into the matrix has resulted in a period of peace, but it has also resulted in the construction of a much stronger matrix movies from which fewer people are prepared to unplug.
