With over 500 million active users, Snapchat is one of the most popular social apps out there.
If you’re a fan of it, it can be tempting to snap at all hours. But using your phone late at night can be bad for you for a few reasons. It can reduce your sleep quality and even give you a headache.

First of all, it depends on whether you’re using Apple or Android. I’m going to compare the two and give you a step-by-step plan for each option below.
Let’s dive in.
How to get Dark Mode in Snapchat on iOS
Snapchat was originally an iOS-only app. And though it’s also available on Android now, the app’s main fanbase consists of Apple users.
If you’re wondering how to get dark mode on Snapchat on your iPhone, it is really simple. Here’s what you need to do:
- Open Snapchat and tap the icon in the top-left corner to go to your Profile page.
- Tap the gear symbol to open Settings.
- Go down the page until you find App Appearance.
- You’ll see three options: Match System, Always Dark and Always Light.
- Select Always Dark to enable dark mode.
Note: If you select Match System, the app would just use your phone’s setting. So if you have dark mode enabled on your device, it’ll be enabled on Snapchat. And if you turn it off, it will also be off in the app.
How to get Dark Mode in Snapchat on Android
Does Snapchat even have a dark mode for Android?
But after some digging around, I managed to find a workaround. It’s less than ideal. It involves enabling a forced systemwide dark mode through developer options and downloading an older version of Snapchat.
But if you’re on Android and want to save your eyes at night, it’s (currently) your only option.
So here’s how to how to get dark mode on Snapchat on your Android device:
- Go to your phone’s Settings, then navigate to About Phone.
- Find a line that reflects your current OS build. For some phones, this is Build Number. For my Xiaomi, it’s MIUI Version.
- Tap it seven times. Congratulations, you just unlocked developer mode on your phone.
- Go back to Settings and find Developer Options. This may also be under Additional Settings.
- Find Override force-dark and toggle it on.
You’ve just enabled forced night mode on your device that’ll turn all your apps dark. In the future, you’ll notice that if an app doesn’t support dark mode, Android will invert its colors.
But since I’m showing you how to put Snap in dark mode, specifically, we’re not done yet. Some newer versions of the app are immune to this.
So, as I said earlier, you’ll need to get an older version.
- Go to this APKMirror link.
- Scroll down and click Download APK.
- This will download Snapchat 10.72.0.0 to your phone. This older version might lack some newest features, but it’ll get you access to Dark Mode.
- Once the APK is downloaded and installed, and with developer dark mode enabled, open Snapchat.
And now you know how to enable Dark Mode on Snapchat as an Android user. As you can see, it looks completely natural and the text is readable.

How to get Dark Mode in Snapchat on Android by rooting
Admittedly, there’s another way to get Snapchat dark mode on Android. But it involves rooting your device, then using third-party apps such as Swift.

Unless you’re an advanced user familiar with the process, I’d recommend against taking this route.
All in all, dark mode is a very in-demand feature. Between protecting your eyes, helping you sleep better, and making your battery last, it’s something most of us use.
Unfortunately, Android still doesn’t support native dark mode on Snapchat. The simplest, safest workaround is to just use your developer options.
Apple users are blessed in that sense.
